Construction of the first refrigerant to coolant heat exchanger
Page 3: Constructing the evaporator coil

The evaporator coil is made of 12mm copper pipe which I capped and filled with sand to prevent the pipe from folding when bending it with a small radius.
First, I capped one end of a 1.5 meters long piece of 12mm copper pipe.

Bending the spiral around a piece of wood.

Since it was impossible to bend the last few centimeters of the pipe, I decided to cut them off with the good old Dremel. I did this with the sand still in the pipe. I should not have done this, since the cutting disc produces a blast of high-velocity sandgrains as soon as it hits the sand. It is extremely painful when the sand hits you. Remove one of the caps and the sand first before cutting the pipe.
